When a person is grappling with the symptoms of a mental health condition, yet does not receive treatment, the effects can be far-reaching and leave a lasting impression on every facet of that individual’s life. Depression, more specifically, is a serious mental illness and is one example of such a condition that can devastate a person’s very existence if proper care is not implemented. The emotional lows that are cornerstone to this mental health disorder can prevent a person from functioning in a healthy manner and trigger the onset of dangerous methods for coping with turmoil. Substance abuse, for instance, is often a route that depression sufferers take when episodic feelings of sadness, hopeless, and helplessness seem inescapable. Allowing the symptoms of depression to remain untreated alongside the insidious cycle of substance abuse can make overcoming and defeating such afflictions exceedingly difficult to tackle without professional help.
At Twelve Oaks Recovery Center, we understand how untreated symptoms of depression can cause a person to delve deeper into the throes of an addiction to drugs and/or alcohol. We also understand the amount of support and the types of treatment needed to help men and women manage depression symptoms and recover from chemical dependency. For these reasons and more, we, at Twelve Oaks Recovery Center, are pleased to provide high quality rehab treatment for adults who desire to break free from the chains of addiction and heal from the torturous symptoms of depression.
Helping a Loved One
Helping a Loved One or Family Member Get Depression Treatment
Bearing witness to someone struggling with depression can cause those closest to him or her to become overwhelmed with worry as the symptoms of this disorder impact every area of that individual’s life. However, watching someone you love suffer from depression and a substance abuse problem can cause you to feel tremendous pangs of fear for your loved one’s future. There are some steps that can be taken by you to help the person you care about get the help that he or she so desperately needs during this tumultuous time. Consider doing the following:
- Learn all that you can about depression, substance abuse, and how these two concerns can amplify one another when they are present at the same time.
- Talk with your loved one about the status of his or her mental health and his or her abuse of substances. Convey your concern in an empathic manner and be open to hearing what he or she has to say about what is ailing him or her.
- Research treatment providers that supply care for those battling addiction and depression as co-occurring conditions. Conducting research in this way will help ensure the most appropriate care for your loved one.
- Present your findings to your loved one and encourage him or her to reach out to a provider(s) of choice to learn more about the processes of seeking and receiving treatment.
- Offer to accompany your loved one to any scheduled tours or assessments at a treatment center.
Once your loved one has agreed to seek treatment, there are some additional steps that you can take to make this transition smooth:
- Offer to assist your loved one in coordinating transportation, childcare arrangements, or other such incidentals.
- Find out how you can play an active role in the treatment process and commit to being there for your loved one for the duration of his or her care.
- Consult with your loved one’s treatment providers to see what you can do to prepare for your loved one’s return home so that you can be ready to help your loved one once he or she has completed treatment.
Remember that the road to healing and recovering from depression and an addiction is often one that is rife with bumps along the way. Remain optimistic, supportive, and encouraging, and remember to share your positive feelings with your loved one. By following through on the aforementioned recommendations, the person you care about has a higher likelihood of receiving and being successful in treatment.
Why Consider Treatment
Why Consider Treatment for Depression at Twelve Oaks Recovery Center near Pensacola, Florida
Untreated symptoms of a depressive disorder can cause a person to experience a serious decline in functioning. An individual’s personal life, work performance, and ability to even get out of the bed in the morning can all be hindered by depression if treatment is not sought. Couple these adverse effects with those that are known to occur when a person is battling an addiction, and the consequences can be disastrous. When untreated depression and an addiction exist alongside one another, a person’s mental and physical health are likely to plummet in life-threatening ways. Depression symptoms can worsen, leading to the onset of suicidal ideation, self-harm, and even attempts at suicide. Physical health concerns can result when an addiction remains present; concerns that can include vital organ damage or failure, onset of certain diseases, contraction of certain diseases due to illicit drug use, and a high risk of overdose. Seeking treatment can significantly reduce the occurrence of such detriments and allow those battling depression and an addiction to live the happy, healthy lives they deserve to be living.

At Twelve Oaks Recovery Center, we have spent more than 30 years serving Florida with premiere rehab treatment to men and women, aged 18 and older, who are struggling with chemical dependency concerns and co-occurring conditions, including depressive disorders. Beautifully located on the Emerald Coast of Florida on the Navarre Sound, Twelve Oaks offers patients a sense of tranquility as they work towards overcoming their addictions and learning to manage the symptoms of depression. Our dedicated and experienced treatment professionals are uniquely prepared to guide patients through the transformations that will allow them to pursue happier, healthier, and more productive futures. Throughout their time spent at Twelve Oaks, patients can benefit from developing an enhanced sense of self-worth as they learn to create realistic life goals and make healthy lifestyle adjustments.
As part of our mission to provide comprehensive care that is tailored to meet the unique needs of each of our patients, Twelve Oaks has specialized treatment tracks that may be incorporated into a patient’s overall plan of care. During their initial assessment, patients’ appropriateness for placement in any of these tracks will be determined.
In addition to these three specialized treatment tracks, Twelve Oaks Recovery Center offers a variety of therapeutic interventions that may be included into a patient’s individualized treatment plan when receiving care for a depressive disorder. These interventions are described briefly in the following:
Medically monitored detoxification: When patients come to Twelve Oaks Recovery Center and have drugs or alcohol in their systems, they may benefit from undergoing detoxification prior to beginning the therapeutic process. Under the direction of an ASAM certified addictionologist, Twelve Oaks provides high-level detoxification services that are monitored by nursing staff 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Each patient’s need for detox will be determined on a case-by-case basis, taking into account his or her medical history and all of his or her presenting concerns.
Medication management: In order to most appropriately treat the distressing symptoms of depression, certain psychotropic medications may be incorporated into a patient’s treatment plan. The use of any medication, however, is always determined based on the specific needs of each individual. Patients meet with a psychiatrist on an as-needed basis in order to determine the appropriateness of any medication used, as well as to make any changes that may be necessary for ensuring the therapeutic effectiveness of that medication.
Individual therapy: Patients are given the opportunity to meet with an individual counselor at a minimum of once each week for individual therapy sessions. These sessions are designed to be a time for patients to process through their time in treatment, while also addressing any concerns that may arise. Additionally, counselors frequently use these individual sessions to incorporate experiential therapy options into a patient’s therapeutic process. Examples of the various experiential options that counselors may have patients engage in include:
- Art
- Guided imagery
- Recreational activities
- Psychodrama
- Yoga
- Beach activities (such as swimming and kayaking)
Family therapy: At Twelve Oaks, we know how instrumental family members can be in helping their loved ones manage and/or recover from the symptoms of depression. For this reason, we provide family therapy sessions for all patients at least once during the time they spend in treatment with us. Additionally, if patients would benefit from additional family therapy sessions, those arrangements will be made by their counselors.
Group therapy: Patients participate in a number of group therapy sessions throughout the duration of their time at Twelve Oaks. During the week, patients take part in three educational groups and two process groups every day. On Saturdays and Sundays, there are five educational groups held, including recreational therapy on Saturday. On Sundays, a spirituality group is held, and patients also have the option of attending a local church as part of that group. Within the educational groups, there are a number of different topics covered, including the following:
- Relapse prevention
- Working the 12-Step program
- Triggers and cravings
- Big Book study
- Stages of change
- Dealing with stress and emotions
- Self-esteem
- Co-dependence
- Conflict resolution
- Anger management
- Communication skills
- Spirituality enrichment study
- Addiction as a brain disease
- 10 principles of change
Group therapy sessions are also often used to incorporate experiential activities into the therapeutic milieu for patients. Examples of activities that patients may participate in as part of these experiential options can include the low ropes course, yoga, psychodrama, guided imagery, art, and recreational therapy. Beach activities are also frequently included in group therapy sessions, including swimming, kayaking, volleyball, and time for patients to gather together around a bonfire.
At Twelve Oaks Recovery Center, we know that overcoming chemical dependency while also learning how to manage the symptoms of depression can be a long process that does not simply end with the completion of residential inpatient treatment. Because of this, we offer step-down treatment options for patients who are in need of comprehensive continuing care services. These step-down options include our partial hospitalization program (PHP) and our intensive outpatient program (IOP). Our staff works closely with patients to determine what the most appropriate next step is for them in their recovery process and then works to ensure that follow-up care and support is established and accessible prior to their leaving treatment.
If you or a loved one is battling the symptoms of depression while also struggling with an addiction to drugs or alcohol, suffering does not have to continue. Allow the caring and compassionate staff at Twelve Oaks Recovery Center to help show you the way to a brighter tomorrow.
